Sulpician Tradition

Sulpician IconSt. Mary’s Seminary & University, our nation’s first seminary, was established by the Sulpician Fathers in 1791. Sulpicians are diocesan priests dedicated to priestly formation and seminary work. They were founded by Jean-Jacques Olier at the parish of Saint-Sulpice in Paris in 1641.

Sulpicians direct seminaries in France, Canada, the United States, Columbia, Zambia, Malawi, and Viet Nam. In addition to St. Mary’s Seminary & University, Sulpicians also direct Theological College (Washington, DC) and Assumption Seminary (San Antonio).
