Join this three-day workshop designed to help professional Catholic pastoral care ministers respond to the spiritual needs of patients with the liturgical resources from the recently retranslated Order of the Anointing of the Sick and Their Pastoral Care (2026).

The workshop will benefit priests, deacons and lay ministers who work in Catholic or secular health care institutions like hospitals, long-term care facilities or home health services.

Dr. Owen Vyner

Dr. Vyner, an associate professor of Theology at Christendom College, Front Royal, Va., holds a doctorate from John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family, Melbourne, as well as a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Liturgical Institute, Mundelein, and a Master of Theological Studies from the John Paul II Institute.

Dr. Vyner served as the Director of Marriage and Family at Our Lady of
Loreto parish, Foxfield, Colorado. His expertise is in Sacramental Theology, the Sacrament of Penance, theology of marriage and the family, and theological anthropology.

Overview

The newly retranslated Order of Anointing of the Sick and of their Pastoral Care has been structured specifically for priestly ministry.

The purpose of these sessions will be to provide a comprehensive and in-depth presentation of the ritual’s prayers and rubrics to enrich a priest’s ministry to the sick and dying.

The sessions will explore what is new, both significant and minor differences, and what has remained unchanged.

The sessions will be extensive in their content: the Order will be examined within the context of its scriptural foundations, Church teaching, development of doctrine, and post-conciliar reform of the sacrament.

The fundamental focus will be on deepening a priest’s engagement in continuing Christ’s healing ministry.

While incorporating lectures, the sessions will also offer opportunities for discussion for pastoral applications in the care of the sick and the dying.

What is healing? A baptismal-anthropological approach

 

Tuesday, August 4

Session II: Introduction to the Revised Translation

Scripture, history, reform of the sacrament

Session III: Ministry to the Sick

Recipient (various pastoral situations); rites of Communion and Anointing

 

Wednesday, August 5

Session IV: Ministry to the Dying

The continuous rite, Confirmation, and Commendation of the Dying

Session V: Conclusion

The appendices in the Order, emergency, sample rites; pastoral issues, and a theology of suffering
