Bishop Varden was formerly the abbot of the Cisterican Abbey of St. Bernard in the UK. He is the first Norwegian to serve as the Roman Catholic Bishop of Trondheim in modern times. He is the author of several internationally recognized books on spirituality, including Healing Wounds: The 2025 Lent Book, Chastity: Reconciliation of the Senses, and The Shattering of Loneliness: On Christian Remembrance. Bishop Varden’s website is titled Coram fratribus intellexi (coramfratribus.com) after his episcopal motto.

The Day

Bishop Erik Varden will lead a day that includes:

  • several conferences from Bishop Varden.
  • the concelebration of Mass with him.
  • opportunity for confession.
  • quiet time.

St. Mary’s provides a unique environment for reflection in an historic location with prayerful spaces, areas for both solitude and fraternity surrounded by winding paths through park-like grounds.
